Evaluation 4- Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product?

Psychographics

Interests: Most teenagers like to spend their free time going out with friends and it's common to socialise by going to the cinema where they would choose a film that is suitable for them. As our film is categorised within the teen angst genre we feel that teenage girls from the age 13+ would be able to relate to our characters (as the plot is from females perspective)  and the situations they face.

The music must make our audience feel happy with the upbeat tune but should keep them intrigued as it gets more serious.

Teenage girls are interested in relating to characters so in the opening we want to make our audience feel as though they have experienced what happens to the main characters. They will continue watching to find out how Jinx overcomes/deals with Brittany.

Beliefs: We want our target audience to believe in this verisimilitude world, as if they are experiencing what happens in our narrative. Also, we need them to know that it is a teen angst so they find it all easily relatable.

Values: Our teen angst opening sequence needs to have various camera angles to introduce the settings and characters effectively. As everything is being introduced we will have a diegetic bell ringing and bird ambience for the sound effects. After the characters finish their first piece of dialogue upbeat music will begin to play as the titles come up. This will create a positive vibe within the sequence so the audience will feel happy  and in anticipation.

Demographics

Age: My target audience age range is from 13 to young adults. But it is specifically for teenagers due to the teen angst genre.

Gender: Aimed mainly at females so they can relate to characters.

Class: Our film will be aimed at semi skilled and unskilled manual workers (blue collar class) as well as unemployed (younger teens unable to work), students and casual workers.

Race: Aimed at all races.

Geographical location: Our film will be aimed at female teenagers in England.

Our film has two main characters that are the protagonists as the audience only see situations from their perspectives. We think that aiming our film at females between the ages of 13 and 20 is reasonable because this covers the teenage range of viewers. The viewers are able to relate to the characters as a teenager is more likely to have problems within a friendship, especially females.

- Include dialogue and music so it's all clear
- Use high quality camera
- Fix lighting issues
- Use tripod when appropriate
- Make sure weather conditions are the same throughout the scenes that are put together
- Quiet mood music at the end of the sequence
- Quiet music at the beginning to prevent awkward silence

Brittany Character In Gossip! (Party Attire)

Brittany's party outfit is black with red lipstick, black heels and accessorised with a red rose and red bracelet. The colour red connotes danger and sass which links to Brittany's characteristics. Black is to show confidence, and the combination of the two represents danger. This tells the audience to be slightly fearful of what Brittany can do with the wrong attitude.

Main Characters In Gossip!

Brittany and Jinx are really close friends in Gossip but as with all best friends there are ups and downs in their friendship. They get along really well but sometimes Brittany disappoints Jinx by not doing what's right for their relationship.

The 'nice' friend and the 'fake' friend usually have a weird love/hate relationship in teen angst films. They are best friends even though one can annoy the other. This links to research we did on Sharpay and Gabriella from HSM.

Brittany Character In Gossip!

u

Brittany is a sassy character and she is a bit bossy so these close express those things, she isn't a very smiley girl and she likes things done her way. The full length photo is to show the characters outfit. It is very casual with leggings and uggs but the added scarf is her way of accessorising and making her outfit more interesting. Also the whole outfit is comfy which shows the contrast between it and her party outfit.

In these photos Bryony is haf smiling to show off Brittany's characteristics.

We linked Bryony's character to Sharpay from High School Musical. This is because we think characters are similar in their personalities.

Actor Changes

Due to actors not being able to be filmed when needed for the draft and final product, we had to change the characters for Gossip very slightly. The roles that needed to be filmed were 'Roxanne' and 'Some Guy' so for the character Roxanne we have enrolled Millie Todd and for 'Some Guy' we have decided to just use my legs and not show my face so we will take the clip of 'Brittany' on the phone from a low side angle.

Comparing Production Logos

Different production companies have different logos based on their specific genre. This can inform the audience of the type film they're about to watch before the film is even revealed.

For example, Woodshed is a production company that produce horror films. Their logo conveys the genre successfully as it has been made out of monochrome colours and has a sharp edge design. This creates a dark negative mood as there is no colour we feel uneasy and know they don't produce bright and happy films. The jagged and pointy edges connote violence and horrors are associated with this.

Also Walt Disney is another example of a production company that specifies in a certain genre which is fantasy and fiction. The castle in the background of the logo connotes to the audience that the films are fantasy and fiction. The font that is used for the logo furthers the genre as it looks quite fancy which can represent princess elements within the films. There are many different versions of the Disney logo where some include colour. This suggests that the films they produce are uplifting and happy. This also tells the audience that their films are child friendly and mainly aimed at a younger audience.

We have analysed these examples of production company logos to further our reasons that our Arrow logo can be used for a variety of different film genres in the film industry.

Production Company Logo For Gossip!

The design of this company logo is plain and monotone colours so it doesn't take attention away from the 'Gossip!' logo. As it is plain it can be associated with a variety of genres instead of just one (e.g. teen angst). The logo is minimalistic and simple which keeps it in the back of peoples mind yet the design is quite interesting as there are six arrows which create the letters A and W.

Settings For Gossip!

This is the setting the audience first see as our two main characters walk out together talking about the party planned for that evening. The school bells ring (non diegetic) as the two walk out the doors. This still shot will be taken on a tripod to prevent shaking and it'll clearly capture the characters surroundings as we'll go on to follow them with the camera, starting with from behind them.

When shooting from behind the characters as they go through the doors we should make sure that random pupils don't walk past.

Through the first scene the audience are taken through the whole school setting we used to show the characters ages.

There are also two other settings that we used which were Jenna and Bryony's houses where we did the footage of stairs, bedrooms, Jenna's kitchen and Bryony's living room. Also, Zoe's living room for a few seconds when 'Jinx' is on the phone to 'Roxanne' who will be played by Ronnie but was Zoe's sister for the practise film sequence.

For the estate scenes we used two foot paths and showed the characters from a variety of angles but mainly from the back and front. When on the estate we had to be aware of cars and passing people, so if there was anyone around we stopped filming to prevent talking or road noises to be in the clip. If we picked up noises we would have had to edit them out.

For the ending few seconds we wanted to have it raining to show how Jinx's day is going down hill, this would have been pathetic fallacy but we obviously can't control the weather.

We used these settings as they are stereotypical of the teen angst genre which links back to our extensive research on all of the teen angst openings.

Second Draft Of Gossip!

With this footage we have added sound and titles to develop our skills at knowing how to finalise the whole footage. At the beginning there is a school bell ringing sound and the ambience of birds to set the scene.

Jinx Character In Gossip!

Jenna Waterfield is the actress who plays Jinx.

This is the outfit that Jenna will wear during the first half of the sequence. Her outfit is smart to show that she is clever and sophisticated. Also her outfit helps to convey to the audience that she has just come out of school. She looks casual enough to create a contrast between now and later when she is dressed up and ready for the party.

As a character Jinx is friendly and happy so we took these photos of her smiling to show these characeristics.

We decided to cast Jenna as Jinx as to portray her as the caring character as her soft features and smile make her look very appraochable.

The character 'Jinx' is very similar to Gabriella Montez from High Schiool Musical. These characters are both the stereotypical 'nice' friend.

The Credits For Gossip!

The credits will be written in the same colour as the title 'Gossip!' so everything matches and suits the teenager target audience. Actors names are going to be in a wavy font with the start of the forename and suirname in capital letters, the other letters in lowercase. This font will not be layered up, but the names of the characters will be layered and bold to show that they are made up like the title Gossip! is. This shows creativity because of how unique each word will be typed out. Also, the characters names will be in capital letters so the audience can identify which names are important to the sequence.

Other characters names and the directors, producers etc (me and zoe) will be typed up in a different font because these names are not important to the sequence as the two characters, Joe as 'some guy' and Ronnie as 'Roxanne' are only extras to the sequence as Joe doesn't talk and Roxanne only has a few lines. Me and Zoe are not in the clip at all but we still need to give ourselves credit for everything we do in order to make the sequence.

Background And Settings For Gossip!

The school setting reassures the audience that the film is based on teenagers, the target audience should be able to relate to the characters as they are in the same age range from 13-18 years old. Any viewer under 13 may not understand the content of the film and anyone over 18 will probably lose interest as it includes stereotypical teenage behaviour. Some of what the characters do or say may be humorous because of how it is what people expect from teenage girls.

Showing the girls in each of their houses getting ready and being quite relaxed is another thing that the target audience can relate to as they most likely have gone through the same process for a party. Each setting for the scenes where the main girls are getting ready shows the little details someone would expect for a teen angst sequence. For example, the close up of the make up brushes show how many brushes one teenage girl owns which is a typical representation of girls in general.

When each character is walking through the estate it shows how independent they are because they are both alone and they have faith in themselves to know where to go. This is also a stereotypical representation of how all teenagers want freedom. As the backgrounds are empty it shows the audience how the space around the girls could be threat space but they are not bothered by it because they are comfortable in a place they know well.

Rough Plan For Filming Gossip! (Draft 1)

https://youtu.be/egdQEMgkKVE

https://youtu.be/i1_9r4eW_ZQ

https://youtu.be/TIn_YLzNLmA

Scene One

-Two photos showing setting, informs viewer characters are in a school
-Camera on main characters chatting
-No dialogue
-Shot of legs/feet
-Shot from the side
-Back to front view
-Side shot again
-Back to front
-Shot from opposite side
-Edited to achieve different viewpoint shots which inform viewer on setting
-Shot from behind showing characters saying goodbye and walking separate ways
-Pause as they walk different directions, still shot of scene

Scene Two

-Begins with front view of Jenna brushing hair
-Flicks to Bryony's make up brushes
-Zooms out to show Bryony doing her make up
-Flicks to Jenna holding up dresses
-Flicks to Bryony's hand going along the banister
-Shows Bryony walking downstairs
-Split screen of two characters, Jenna's feet running downstairs shows she's eager but Bryony is just casually strolling which shows she's not bothered about the party
-Flicks to Jenna putting drinks into her bag and leaving room
-Flicks to Bryony putting shoes on (heels in real thing)
-Flicks to Jenna walking out the door (turning off light), fade to black

Scene Three

-Starts with split screen of characters walking through an estate
-Bryony enters a house, Jenna looks around her
-Just Jenna on screen now, she takes her phone out of her coat and rings Bryony
-Flick to Bryony talking on the other end of the phone (will be 'some guy' sat next to her)
-Flicks bac to Jenna looking annoyed and over the shoulder of her hanging up
-She turns and walks again
-Gets a call from 'Roxanne' (Ronnie) over the shoulder shot to make it clear
-Zoom out to Jenna looking confused
-Cut to 'Roxanne' on laptop in a house
-Back to Jenna looking annoyed now, hanging up and putting phone away
-Turns and steps forward
-Close up of her eyes looking around (rolling)
-Ends on Jenna's eyes looking frustrated

In the real sequence the characters will be wearing casual clothes at the school but as they get ready they'll be dressed up for the party. So will be wearing dresses and nice shoes like heels. Also, the real sequence will include Joe playing 'some guy' who we see sat next to Bryony when she's on the phone to Jenna, and Roxanne will be Ronnie but with same setting. Editing will be the same and music will be over the top of the sequence. Me and Zoe are yet to decide where to put credits, we think it'll be easier to do when we have the whole real sequence. The title and production company will be shown at the beginning of the sequence, the end of scene one most likely.
